| Rob Matthew’s view is not that he is blind, it’s just that he can’t see. He has won 29 international gold medals including 8 Paralympic gold medals. He has set 22 world records and, competing in his debut for New Zealand in September 2009, won the silver medal at the World Triathlon Championships on the Gold Coast. Rob has been awarded with the MBE from the Queen. He has cycled around the world, driven a racing car at high speed; he skis on snow and on water, and plays golf, football and cricket. Rob’s focus is now on tandem cycling; his driving ambition is to win Gold for New Zealand at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Born with a degenerative eye condition, Rob has been blind since the age of 20, but this has been no problem to Rob who has achieved success beyond most people’s wildest dreams. His autobiography ‘Running Blind’ was published by HarperCollins NZ and has already been reprinted twice since its launch in October 2009. He truly lives by his motto: Anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Rob is also an accomplished motivational speaker whose insights into how to succeed in the face of the greatest challenges is nothing short of inspirational. I know that I wouldn’t have achieved half as much as I have if I had lived a normal life. Going blind forced me to focus. This is the first time in New Zealand publishing history that an adult non-fiction title has been printed in Braille at the same time as print. |
